Our History
In 1979, Doug and Sandi Nie purchased what was then the Fontana Funeral Home located at 2400 Carpenter Road, which was perfectly located to serve both the Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti communities and established the Nie Funeral Home.
As the years went by, Doug and Sandi continued to serve the community and were able to add additional staff, including their son, Doug “Dutch” Nie II, in 1990 after his return from eight years of service with the United States Air Force. Doug, Sandi, and Dutch remain true to their original vision of providing personal funeral services to the families they serve while continuing to explore and implement the latest innovations in funeral technology.
In 2000, Dutch and his wife Donna purchased the funeral home from Doug and Sandi and have
not only continued the family’s tradition but have built upon it, expanding the business to better
serve Washtenaw County with the February 2008 opening of the Nie Funeral Home, Liberty Chapel, located at 3767 W. Liberty Road.
In 2023, we expanded once again with the purchase of the former Janowiak Funeral Home, Geer-Logan Chapel at 320 N. Washington Street, Ypsilanti. The addition of the Nie Family Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Janowiak Chapel has provided us the opportunity to further expand our excellent serve into the Ypsilanti and surrounding communities.
The last decade has seen a shift in how our culture views funeral services, from traditional
rituals grounded in habit to an emphasis on personalized services. The Nie Family Funeral Home has kept up with these changes by utilizing new technology in a respectful and dignified way. We strive to capture and preserve the stories of the lives that were lived and present them in a meaningful way to allow those affected by the loss to truly participate in services.
Today, the Nie Family Funeral Home has three generations of Nies working to continue a vision
that began over forty years ago, as Dutch and Donna’s son, Jacob Nie, proudly became part of
our management team in 2019.
As the Nie Family Funeral Home tradition continues into its third generation, we want to
express our gratitude for the continued trust and faith of our community. Thank you for allowing our family to continue taking care of your family.
